About Joe Vieira

Joe Vieira is a 47-year-old cook with a lifetime of stories written in steam, smoke, and seasoning.

He didn’t come up through fancy culinary schools or polished test kitchens. He came up the real way — on the line in hardworking professional kitchens, through long shifts, burned fingertips, handwritten recipes, and the kind of repetition that turns instinct into craft. Joe is self-taught, kitchen-forged, and experience-built.

But his real foundation started long before the restaurants.

Joe’s grandmother (a proud Portuguese woman from New Bedford) taught him that food isn’t just something you eat. It’s something you pass down. Her roots trace back to the beautiful Açores islands, and through her, Joe learned the flavors, patience, and soul of authentic Portuguese cooking. Alho sizzling in olive oil. Fresh pão on the table. Seafood done simply and honestly. Recipes measured by feel, not by cups.

Today, Joe calls South Texas home, and his food tells the story of everywhere he’s been.

From authentic Portuguese dishes inspired by his avó’s cozinha, to Southern comfort food that feeds the spirit, to bold Tex-Mex flavors, and slow-smoked Texas-style BBQ that speaks for itself. Joe doesn’t just cook meals. He cooks identity. Heritage. Family.

And then there’s the name.

Avô's Eats comes from the Portuguese word avô, grandfather. Because above all else, Joe is proud to be one. His grandson is the heart behind the name and the reason behind the fire. Everything Joe cooks carries that legacy forward: tradition meeting the next generation.

For Joe Vieira, food is more than a profession.
It’s heritage from the Açores.
It’s lessons from New Bedford.
It’s smoke rising in South Texas.
It’s love passed from grandmother to grandson.

And at Avô's Eats, you’re not just eating a meal.

You’re sitting at the family table.
